Lawmen arrest two ‘militants’ for plotting to kill filmmaker

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested two suspected militants for plotting the murder of filmmaker Khijir Hayat Khan in the capital.

The two militants are the members of banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam, also known as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), and also the masterminds of the planned attack on the filmmaker, according to a DMP statement.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the CTTC, conducted a raid at a house in the city’s Banani area on Monday and arrested two militants - Md Emdadul Islam alias Mehdi Hassan(30),) and Abu Bakr (20)-, the statement said.

A group of suspected militants attacked Khijir Hayat, his brother and the driver in the capital’s Baridhara area at 11:30pm on January 17, 2016.

Earlier, a case was filed with the Banani Police Station in this regard.

The arrestees will be produced before a court in Dhaka on Tuesday, it added.
