A man named Ujjal Roy has submitted an application to the Election Commission (EC) seeking registration for a political party named ‘Awami League.’
In the application submitted on Monday, he sought either ‘boat’ or ‘hilsa’ as the party’s electoral symbol. The address of the party’s central office has been mentioned as ‘Bangabandhu Avenue.’
The ‘boat’ is the electoral symbol of Bangladesh Awami League headed by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Ujjal Roy, who hails from the Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur, filed the application for registration with the EC on Monday.
In the application, he signed as the party’s president and stated that the party does not currently have a bank account.
Ujjal also informed the EC that the central committee of his party was formed on March 24, with its tenure set to expire on April 20 next.
About the application, EC Additional Secretary KM Ali Newaz told reporters that the commission follows the legal and procedural requirements about the registration of political parties.
“The EC would only accept applications that meet all necessary criteria. If any application fails to meet the required conditions, it would not be accepted,” he said.
The Election Commission on March 10 issued a public notice inviting applications within April 20 next from new political parties for getting registered with the EC. Later the High Court suspended the validity of the public notice following a write petition.
