Water levels in rivers across Barguna have surged under the impact of a low formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas, causing the Khakdan River to flow 11 centimetres above the danger mark.
According to Barguna Water Development Board (WDB), the river, located south of Gaurichanna union, exceeded the danger level on Wednesday night, raising concerns about flooding in the coastal low-lying areas.
Md. Mahatab Hossain, a gauge reader at the WDB, said that water levels in the Khakdan River rose further compared to the previous day, warning that if the situation prevails, many residents in vulnerable areas may become waterlogged.
The increased water pressure is also putting nearby embankments at risk of breaching. Even if water levels recede, officials fear the affected regions may face riverbank erosion subsequently.
