Magura farmers expect bumper Boro yield

DAE estimates rice output at 122,450 tonnes worth Tk 5 billion

Magura farmers have been expecting a bumper yield from Boro paddy cultivation this season as the DAE estimates production to reach 122,450 tonnes of rice, worth approximately Tk 5.0 billion.

Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said a total of 39,535 hectares was brought under Boro cultivation and DAE incentivised growers with seed, DAP and MOP fertilisers.

Abu Talha, a farmer of Magura Sadar's Norihati village, said he cultivated Boro paddy on two bighas of land with incentives from DAE. "We have been receiving smooth supply of fertiliser. I am optimisic to achieve a bumper production."

Vobesh Roy, another farmer of Shibrampur village under Magura Sadar Upazila, said he has brought three bighas of land under boro cultivation and favourable weather conditions enabled farmers to prepare an "excellent" seedbed. He added that smooth power supply has enabled them to irrigate their land in full swing.

Farmer Golam Kader of Jagla village said he brought two bighas of his land under Boro cultivation this season and expecting 30 maunds paddy.

Farmer Moinul Hossen of Magura Sadar's Akshi village said he started cultivating paddy on three bighas of land since December.

"I shall be able to harvest my paddy in April," he said, adding that he is optimistic to get a handsome price as he is harvesting his paddy earlier.

He also said the soil is still wet from rainfall of the last rainy season and they required less irrigation as a result.

"At the same time I have collected quality Boro seeds from a BADC (Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation) dealer," he further said, adding that all of these have made him optimistic that the yield would be lucrative for him.

Magura DAE Deputy Director Md Tajul Islam said they have ensured smooth supply of fertiliser and seeds for the growers. He further said that they are expecting bumper production due to favourable weather in the district.
