Five days after the murder of police-listed “top criminal” Tarik Saif Mamun, a case has finally been filed against 10-12 unidentified suspects.
Mamun’s wife, Bilkis Akhter Ripa, filed the case at Dhaka’s Sutrapur Police Station on Saturday, said the station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md Saiful Islam.
Although the police have said that five suspects, including two who “directly took part” in the murder, have been arrested, none of their names have been noted in the case, reports bdnews24.com.
The OC said, “I asked the plaintiff about this when I filed the case. Her lawyer was with her at the time. She said that she did not know any of the suspects, so she did not want to name anyone.
“We have to look to the plaintiff’s interests. The plaintiff said that she doesn’t know the suspects. We will investigate.”
The investigating officer of the case will “look into it and find those involved”, he said.
Mamun was shot dead at around 11 am on November 10 near the gate of Dhaka National Medical College, near the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Old Dhaka.
Then on Tuesday night, the DB arrested four people from Narsingdi -- Md Faruk Hossain Faisal alias Kutta Faruk, 38; Robin Ahmed alias Pias, 25; Md Rubel, 34; Shamim Ahmed, 22; and one person from Dhaka’s Rayerbazar -- Md Yusuf alias Jibon, 42.
Police say that Faruk and Robin were the two people “directly involved” in the shooting and were caught on camera during the incident.
However, since there was no case filed over Mamun's murder at the time, police showed them arrested in a case under the Arms Act at Mohammadpur Police Station and received a four-day remand for interrogation.
The case details said that "some criminals" shot and killed Mamun in broad daylight.
Sub-Inspector Krishna Kumar Das of the Kotwali Zonal Team started a shadow investigation into the incident under the instructions of the higher authorities of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). As part of the investigation, the police arrested five people in a special operation after receiving information that they were involved in the murder. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement.
The case dossier says that when the accused gave them information about the weapons and bullets used in the murder, the suspect Yusuf handed over two pistols and bullets from a house behind Rashid Mansion in Rayerbazar. Among the seized weapons, Faruk and Robin identified the weapons used in the murder. They confirmed they had killed Mamun by shooting them multiple times. They “confessed” that they carried out the killing after receiving Tk 200,000. Of this, the police have recovered Tk 153,640 in addition to a motorcycle used during the murder.
Md Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner of the DMP Detective Branch, said following the arrests that Mamun was shot dead by hired killers due to an “internal conflict” among criminals.
