A 35-year-old man has died from injuries suffered during a “mob beating" after being accused of stealing construction materials in Postogola of Dhaka’s Shyampur.
The victim, identified as Abdur Rahim, passed away while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday morning, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Shyampur Zone Assistant Commissioner Sarafat Ullah.
The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Sunday when Rahim was caught allegedly stealing rods from a project under the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), reports bdnews24.com.
AC Sarafat said Rahim was "caught red-handed" at the BIWTA project site. “He was beaten, and since there were metal rods on site, he may have also been injured by falling.”
“Some stolen items and 15 yaba tablets were recovered from him,” he added.
Locals alerted the police, who then took Rahim to the hospital, where he later died.
His body has been kept at the morgue for post-mortem examination.
Prior to his death, a case had been filed against Rahim on Sunday night on charges of theft.
Police said they will carry out an investigation and take legal action in connection with his death.
