A man accused of killing an 8-year-old girl in Sitakunda has confessed in court to his involvement in the crime.
Babu Sheikh, the suspect, gave his statement on Wednesday before Judicial Magistrate-1 Sayma Afrin Hima, admitting his guilt in the killing of Jannatul Nesa, also known as Ira Moni, according to state prosecutor Md Sarowar Hossain Lovelo, bdnews24.com reports.
After recording the confession, the court ordered that he be sent to jail and directed investigators to submit the chargesheet by Apr 27.
The child was found on Sunday with her throat slit in a remote hilly zone of Sitakunda in Chattogram district.
She died early Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Ira Moni, a second-grade student at a local primary school, lived in the Chhoto Kumira Master Para of the district.
Her father Monirul Islam works as a battery-run rickshaw driver.
Police arrested Babu, 45, in Sitakunda’s Kumira around noon on Tuesday following the child’s death.
He hails from Madhyam Pulupur village under Gobindaganj Police Station in Gaibandha and had been living next door to the victim’s family in Sitakunda.
At a press briefing at Sitakunda Police Station on Tuesday evening, Chattogram Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan said the suspect had planned the attack due to a dispute with the girl’s father.
As part of that plan, he allegedly lured the child out of her home on Sunday morning with chocolate and promises of an outing.
He then travelled by bus from Kumira to Sitakunda and took her on foot to a hill in the Botanical Garden area, where he attempted to rape her and later slit her throat, police said.
