A Rangpur court has sentenced a man to death for the murder of a policeman in Rangpur.

Rangpur Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Marzia Khatun delivered the verdict in the case on Monday afternoon.

The death row convict has been identified as 26-year-old Parvez Rahman Palash, who hailed from Haragach Thana.

The case documents say that Assistant Sub-Inspector Piarul was stabbed and injured by a drug addict Palash in the city’s Shahebganj area on Sept 25, 2021. He then died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Police filed a case in two separate cases against Palash, one for murder and another under the Narcotics Control Act. He was then arrested.

After hearing the testimony of 18 suspects and arguments from both sides, the court sentenced Palash to death and fined him Tk 10,000.

He was also sentenced to five years in prison after two other charges against him were proven.

The suspect was given the death sentence as the charges against Palash were proven beyond a reasonable doubt, according to Additional Public Prosecutor ASM Mahamudul Karim.
