Police say they have recovered the body of a man with a mental disability from a pond in Kamarkhand Upazila of Sirajganj.
Kamarkhand Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdur Rouf said the body was recovered from a pond behind the ACI Foods Limited factory in Kutirchar of the Sirajganj-Nalka regional road on Friday.
The deceased, Shamim Hossain, 28, was a resident of Kutirchar village.
After the body was recovered, enraged locals attacked the ACI factory, vandalising its doors and windows.
SI Rouf said Shamim left his house on Wednesday afternoon and did not return home.
Despite extensive searching, his relatives could not find him, he added.
The victim’s father, Saiful, identified with a single name, later found the body in the pond on Friday afternoon.
Rouf says Shamim was hacked and strangled with a cloth, and his body was partially set on fire, likely in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Investigators believe it was a “planned murder”.
The officer added that locals attacked the factory, acting on suspicion.
“The situation is now under control. The body has been recovered and sent to the hospital morgue. Preparations for a case are under way in this incident.”
Attempts are being made to obtain a statement from the ACI Foods Limited factory on the incident.
