A Dhaka court has remanded nine suspects, including former Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, former education minister Dipu Moni, advisor to Sheikh Hasina Salman F Rahman, and former law minister Anisul Huq, in murder and attempt to murder cases filed at two police stations in the capital over incidents during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaque made the decision following a hearing on Monday, bdnews24.com reports.
Manik, Dipu Moni, Salman, Anisul, former mayor Atiqul Islam, former MP Solaiman Salim, former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak and former Badda Thana Sramik League Vice President Golam Sarwar Pintu were remanded for two days for questioning in the murder case of autorickshaw driver Hafizul Sikder at Badda Police Station.
Salim and former councillor Ranjan Biswas have also been remanded for two days in a case over a murder attempt on Jagannath University student Anik Kumar Das at Kotwali Police Station.
Omar Faruq Faruqi, public prosecutor of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, confirmed the information.
The investigating officers in the two cases brought the suspects to court on Monday and petitioned for them to be remanded for five days in each of the cases filed at the two police stations. The defence then petitioned for the remand petitions to be scrapped and for bail to be granted. PP Faruqi moved the court to remand them.
After hearing from both sides, the judge issued the remand decisions.
The case at Badda Police Station says that autorickshaw driver Hafizul joined the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests in Badda on Jul 20 and was killed that day in gunfire. His family filed the case on Aug 21.
