Technical glitch disrupts metro rail operations for over 5 hours

The city’s metro rail operation faced problems once again on Saturday afternoon due to a technical issue near Uttara, forcing the authority to operate trains partially from Motijheel to Pallabi for over five hours.

Sources said the train operation was stopped around 1:15 pm after a problem in the signalling system near Uttara South station.

Due to the inability to solve the problem immediately, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited managed the train operation partially from Motijheel to Uttara from 2 pm with the available train sets on the line.

A source said that since the 20.1-kilometer track has its last turnover at Pallabi, the company could only operate trains from Motijheel to Pallabi with the available sets on the track.

“No train from the depot could be operated during the period due to the problem,” said one of them.

DMTCL Director Nasir Uddin Ahmed told the FE that the MRT service was finally restored at 6:45 pm after resolving the problem.

He said the operation was suspended on the Uttara side to resolve the issue in signalling.

However, passengers said that due to the problem, they suffered as the headway of trains was delayed from 12 minutes to 20 minutes or more.

The Mass Rapid Transit Line 6 (MRT 6), since its launch in December 2022, has been facing various technical problems in operation, which experts say is due to the operation of the first-of-its-kind urban transport running on electricity without adequate training and skilled manpower.
