Migrant workers have started to march towards the chief advisor’s official residence, the State Guest House Jamuna, to press for a four-point list of demands including release of the workers imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates over cases related to the July Uprising.
Traffic moving from the Sakura intersection towards Minto Road has been brought to a halt due to the programme conducted under the banner of the “Victims of July 24 Movement, Jail-Returned, Migrant Remittance Earners.”
Their demands include that all returned remittance earners who were part of the movement be acknowledged as “July expatriate warriors;” rehabilitation with reasonable compensation for all affected migrant workers and including "remittance warriors" in the national list, reports bdnews24.com.
They set off towards the Jamuna at around 11:30am on Sunday to press for their demands. However, police stopped them in front of the InterContinental Dhaka hotel.
They have been chanting different slogans representing their demands there.
Ahmed Hossain, a protester hailing from Habiganj, said, "We expressed solidarity with the July movement. For this reason, we had to go to jail abroad and endure persecution. Many of us have been deported, while some are still in jail. Under the circumstances, those in jail must be released and the victims must be identified. Otherwise, we will not clear the road."
The protestors were still there as of 12:00 pm, and said they would keep moving forward if none of the advisors showed up within an hour.
Police officers at the location did not give a comment on the matter.
