Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari is set to resume classes on Sunday at a “limited scale” after a 12-day closure due to the deadly Air Force fighter jet crash.
On this day, the institution will resume academic activities with a memorial event and classes at a limited capacity, bdnews24.com reports.
Milestone spokesman Shah Bulbul told bdnews24.com on Saturday, “We have decided to reopen the campus from Sunday at a limited scale for students in grades 9-12.
“A memorial will be held that day. Classes will be limited.”
He added, “Normally, eight classes are held every day, but academic activities will resume on a limited scale, with one or two classes at most. We want students to gradually return to normal life.
“Teachers are standing by the students, counselling services are ongoing, and even the Air Force has set up a medical camp on our campus to provide both physical and mental health consultations.”
On Jul 21, around noon, a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a building of Milestone School, causing a fire.
At least 20 people -- most of them children and students -- were killed that day. Later, the death toll rose to 34.
In recent days, nine injured students have returned home after receiving treatment at hospitals. Several others are still receiving treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and other hospitals.
The day after the deadly crash, the nation observed a day of state mourning.
Six days after the incident, the institution had initially planned to resume limited classes at its Diabari campus starting Jul 27.
On the previous day, Bulbul said: “Classes won’t start on Sunday. Initially, a three-day closure was announced, which was then extended for two more days, Sunday and Monday.”
Asked whether the school would reopen on Tuesday after the break, he said: “That decision will be known on Monday. The authorities will meet and decide whether to reopen or not.”
However, on Jul 28, the closure was extended for a third time, this time until Aug 2.
