Mobile court raids put 19 in prison for drug addiction

Two separate mobile courts in Rajshahi on Tuesday sentenced 19 suspects to different jail terms on charge of drugs abuse and drug trading.

Earlier Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested 29 alleged drug addicts conducting four separate drives in Chapainawabganj, Natore, Naogaon and Joypurhat districts, said RAB officials familiar with the drives. Later the arrestees were produced before the concerned mobile courts.

The courts led by Executive Magistrates Saiful Islam and Mobarak Hossain awarded different jail terms to 19 of the arrested suspects. Eight of the detainees were fined Tk 40,000 by the courts. Regular cases were lodged against two others.

RAB sources said the elite force during the drives also seized six yaba tablets, 0.905 grams of cannabis, 34 ample drug-injections, 11,000 litres of country-made liquor and some other drugs-taking instrument, reports BSS.

Saiful Islam, assistant superintendent of police working with the RAB, said different courts in the districts have sent more than 523 drug addicts to jail in the last 21 days.
