Former Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed has opened up about the BDR mutiny that took place in February, 2009 at the headquarters of the border security force in Peelkhana of the capital.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel on Thursday (September 5), he talked about the roles of the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League leaders Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mirza Azam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, and the Army played during and after the BDR rebellion.
During the mutiny, in order to save time General Ahmed launched ‘Operation Restore Order,’ without waiting for government approval. Amid the mutiny, he contacted the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at 9:54am and received permission to proceed.
He criticised media coverage for exacerbating the situation. He further mentioned that a RAB team arrived before 10:00am but was not allowed to enter BDR headquarters at Peelkhana.
Despite the military's preparations, the government opted for a political solution, sending representatives to negotiate with the rebels, who demanded amnesty— a demand Moeen strongly opposed.
He has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and plans to publish a book detailing the BDR mutiny.
