A fire has broken out at Baburhat wholesale textile market in Narsingdi – the largest in Bangladesh.

At least nine units of firefighters rushed to the market after the fire started near the Baburhat Merchants Association office around 11:15pm on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

Citing the traders, bdnews24.com reported that it was unclear where the fire had originated as the market houses around 2,500 shops on narrow corridors.

“The fire is getting bigger as one firefighting unit is coming after another,” he said.

According to estimates, the fire burnt more than 80 shops in two hours.

No casualties were reported immediately.

The market at Baburhat is one of the traditional sales hubs of local fabrics in Bangladesh.

Several indigenous fabrics of the market, including gamchha and lungi, are famous throughout the country and exported as well.

Thousands of traders and clothing workers depend on the market for their livelihoods.
