A mother and her teenage daughter were found dead in their house in Burichang upazila of Cumilla district on Tuesday. They are believed to have died by ingesting poison late Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Zaheda Akhter (35) and her daughter Mishu Akhter (14). They had been living in a rented house belonging to one Abul Khayer in Rampur village of the upazila.

After the incident, Zaheda Akhter’s husband, Mir Hossain, went into hiding, said Mohammad Azizul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Burichang Police Station.

Family sources said Zaheda and her daughter were originally from Joynagar village in Feni’s Chhagalnaiya upazila, where Mir Hossain worked as a mason.

According to police, Mir Hossain had taken loans from various sources but was unable to repay them. Facing mounting financial pressure, he moved with his family to Rampur village in Burichang and started living in hiding.

Police suspect that ongoing financial hardship and marital disputes may have led Zaheda and her daughter to consume poison on Monday night.

“Initial evidence suggests death by poisoning. Further details will be known after the autopsy report,” said the OC.
