Mozammel house violence: 7 with injuries taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital
Seven people involved in the attack and vandalism at the Gazipur home of former Liberation War affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with injuries after they were attacked by locals.
Md Faruk, the officer in charge at the DMCH Police Outpost said that seven people had been brought to the hospital’s emergency department and are receiving treatment, reports bdnews24.com.
Five of the injured have been identified as 16-year-old Shuvo Shahriar from Gazipur’s Sign Board area, 24-year-old Yakub and 17-year-old Kashem from Gacha Thana, 22-year-old Sourav from Tongi East Thana, and 22-year-old Hasan from Gazipur Sadar Thana. The two others have yet to be identified.
Rabiul Islam, additional deputy commissioner (north) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police had said at 8pm on Friday that 13 people had been injured in the incident.
Pias, a friend of the injured Sourav, told the media: “Students who are part of the Anti-discrimination Student went to the house of Mozammel Haque at 8:30pm when they heard of the robbery and looting. The Awami League and locals used speakers to launch an attack on them.”
“My friend was among the many people injured. Seven of them were brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital overnight.”
Nabil, a joint convener of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement’s Gazipur district committee who was also injured in the incident, told the media: “Some of us went to the house of former minister Mozammel Haque when we heard reports of looting. I went there later and saw the looting myself.”
“Then, as we told locals that we would help them stop the looting, a group of masked men came, pushed me to the ground and beat me. I informed the Gacha Police Station, Basan Police Station, Tongi Police Station and the Sadar Police Station. But they were late in arriving.”
Several students from the Anti-discrimination Student Movement were injured in the attack, he said.
He said they would not have suffered such injuries if police had reached the scene quicker. He demanded swift justice for the incident.
Md Rabiul Hasan, the chief organiser of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Gazipur, told the media: “Our people went to the scene after hearing reports that some people had vandalised and set fire to the village house of former Liberation War affairs minister Mozammel Haque in the Dhirashram Dakhinkhan area of the city.”
“Before they knew it, the locals attacked our people. Thirteen to 15 people were injured.”
After receiving reports of the incident, Rabiul said that police and army personnel went to the scene to bring the situation under control, rescued the injured, and sent them to the hospital.
