Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has said that they will make efforts diplomatically to bring back Akteruzzaman Shahin, the accused mastermind of killing Anwarul Azim Anar MP.

He made the remark on Wednesday while responding to a query about bringing back Akteruzzaman Shahin from the United States after inaugurating a training course on ‘Database and Analysis of Road Crash Software’ at the DMP headquarters in Dhaka.

The DMP commissioner said that Indian and Bangladeshi police are trying to ascertain the real motive behind the murder.

He said the main mastermind and planner of the killing is now staying outside the country and he is yet to be arrested.

Mr Rahman said that the real motive behind the killing of Member of Parliament (MP) Anar will be known once Shahin is apprehended.

Asked what steps would be taken to bring Shahin back to Bangladesh from the US, he replied, “Police will make the highest efforts to bring him (Shahin) back to Bangladesh.”

He said that the police would see the matter very seriously as the victim was an MP.

Mr Rahman, however, said that Bangladesh doesn't have an extradition treaty with the US, despite the fact, that the police will pursue the highest efforts either in diplomatic or other ways to bring back Akteruzzaman Shahin to the country.

Asked whether to apply the existing extradition treaty with India, for the trial of the criminals arrested there, he said, "You (media) know that the trial of the case could be conducted in Bangladesh as per the country's existing law or maybe in India as the incident of the murder happened there (India)."

“So, the decision on this (trial) could be taken through our (India-Bangladesh) mutual discussion,” the DMP chief said.
