Police have detained Kamal Ahmed Babu, the relief and social affairs secretary of the Jhenaidah District Awami League.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained him from his house in the district town’s Adarshaparha area on Thursday night, Prothom Alo reports.
Local police could not confirm the reason for Babu’s detention.
However, his family and locals indicate that it may be related to the murder investigation of lawmaker Anar.
Family sources revealed that Md Akteruzzaman Shahin, the suspected mastermind behind the lawmaker’s murder, is Babu’s maternal brother.
Babu’s wife Kazi Shirina Afroze, a college teacher, said that DB officers from Dhaka took her husband away on Thursday night.
She added that when she asked why they were taking her husband away, they mentioned needing to talk to him but provided no further details.
Officer-in-Charge at Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Md Shahin Uddin confirmed that the DB team detained Babu for questioning but could not specify the case involved.
Earlier on May 12, MP Anar travelled to India's West Bengal city of Kolkata, only to be killed the next day.
