The body of MP Md Anwarul Azim Anar was not found away from where he was presumed to have been killed, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud has said.
Kolkata police informed Bangladesh Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, that Anar’s body was not found in the flat in the New Town of Bidhannagar, West Bengal, where the murder occurred, he told reporters during a ceremony at Dhaka University on Wednesday noon.
However, several suspects have been arrested following the killing. Of them, some were detained by the Detective Branch (DB) in Bangladesh and two by Kolkata Police. An investigation is currently underway to determine the details of the crime, he said.
Earlier on May 12, Anar, an MP for Jhenaidah-4, went to India for treatment. He had been missing since May 16. When attempts to contact him failed, his Indian acquaintance Gopal Biswas from Kolkata’s Borahnagar lodged a missing diary with the local police.
The home minister is expected to brief the press about the details of the murder, the Foreign Minister said.
“We are keeping track through our Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. The mission is in regular contact with Kolkata Police,” he added.
