Jatiya Press Club on Saturday opened a special corner on 1971 Liberation War coinciding with the Martyred Intellectuals Day and Victory Day celebrations drawing war veterans, editors and senior journalists.

The corner contained shelves having some 100 books on 1971 published at home and abroad while club authorities said more select books on the Liberation War were being procured to enrich the corner under the auspices of JPC’s library and reference sub-committee.

Liberation War researcher and freedom fighter Major (retd) Shamsul Arefin spoke as the chief guest at the function chaired by JPC president Saiful Alam.

Senior journalists and editors including Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman,MP, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Hasan Shahriar , Reazuddin Ahmed, Motiur Rahman, Abul Kalam Azad, Mahfuz Anam, Harun Habib, Monjurul Hasan Bulbul, Khandakar Moniruzzaman, Shawpan Shaha, Sharif Shahab Uddin, Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan,Saban Mahmud, Omar Faruk, and Sohel Haider Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion.

JPC General Secretary Farida Yesmin delivered the welcome speech while its library subcommittee convener Shahnaj Begum conducted the function that begun with popular liberation war songs – “Shob kota janala khule dawna” and “Muktioro mondiro shopano tole” at the garden of the club.

Arefin welcomed the initiatives and laid emphasis on making more documentation over different events and facts of the Great Liberation War.

“There are lots of books on different battles and events of the Mujibnagar government but we still lack documentations on situation of the administration under the Pakistani junta inside Bangladesh which is crucial to know the history of the Liberation War, he said.

He urged researchers and journalists to work on documenting different events that took place inside the country as the war was underway in 1971, reports BSS.
