The government has decided to upgrade the Mymensingh municipality to a city corporation.

The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR) approved a proposal in this regard at its meeting at PMO in Dhaka on Monday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.

After the NICAR meeting at the Secretariat, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed the reporters.

The Cabinet Secretary said Mymensingh will be turned into a city corporation, as it is a divisional headquarters.

But a proposal to extend the boundaries of the Mymensingh Municipality, established in 1869, did not get the green light, he said.

According to bdnews24.com, Mymensingh was declared the eighth administrative division of the country in 2015.

It consists of four districts—Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur and Netrakona.

In August, a new education board, the 11th in the country, was formed to monitor secondary and higher secondary level institutions in the districts under the division.
