Names of Bangabandhu, his family scrubbed from 24 govt schools

The Ministry of Education renamed 24 government schools bearing the names of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members.

On June 4, the Secondary and Higher Education Department (SHED) of the ministry issued a notification changing the names of the institutions.

In the notification signed by Deputy Secretary Rahima Akhter, the SHED said that the names of the institutions have been changed in line with the instructions from the Cabinet decision implementation monitoring branch on February 9, according to a bdnews24.com report.

On April 13, the names of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and members of her family had been removed from 16 technical educational institutions and on April 24, 16 schools, three schools and colleges and two colleges -- a total of 21 educational institutions -- were renamed as well.

The interim government has also previously removed the names of Bangabandhu, Hasina and Awami League leaders from 63 government primary schools, 13 universities, 6 medical colleges and 14 hospitals.
