The National Citizens’ Committee has demanded that Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury apologise and resign following the attack on students at the home of former Liberation War affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Gazipur.
The activists also demanded the resignations of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the local deputy commissioner, reports bdnews24.com.
Ali Naser Khan, a central organiser for the NCC, made the demand at 11:30 am on Saturday from the city’s Bhawal Rajbari field at a rally organised by the organisation’s Gazipur district and metropolitan wings.
Those involved in the attack on students and the public at Mozammel’s home on Friday night must be arrested quickly and handed exemplary punishments after swift trials, Ali said.
The NCC leader claimed that despite informing police and the local administration of the attack, they were late in reaching the scene.
He gave a 24-hour deadline to arrest those involved in the attack and bring them to justice.
The rally was attended by members of different student and social organisations as well as members of the general public. They held a protest march in the city in the afternoon.
It has been alleged that locals attacked students in front of the house of former minister and Gazipur Awami League President Mozammel in the Dhirasram Dakhinkhan area of the city at 9:00 pm on Friday after allegations of a crowd attacking and vandalising the residence. At least 15 students were injured in the incident.
Those injured in the attack were initially admitted to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur. Then, around 1:00 am, seven victims with serious injuries were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
