Dr Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government, said that the national elections could take place by the end of the year.

In a recent interview with Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Yunus emphasised his goal of strengthening Bangladesh’s foundations before handing over power to an elected government, local daily newspaper reports.

His comments come months after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from office in a student-led uprising on August 5. Following her ouster, Yunus took charge of the interim administration.

The Nobel laureate economist underscored the importance of ensuring Bangladesh's self-sufficiency and providing a stable platform for the next elected government.
