National Poet’s birth anniversary celebrated at Dhaka University

Dhaka University authorities on Sunday celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam through colourful processions, discussions, and cultural programmes.

The day’s events began in the morning with a procession led by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.

Teachers, students, officers, and staff gathered at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla and marched to the poet’s grave beside the university mosque where they placed floral wreaths and offered prayers, according to UNB.

Later, a commemorative meeting was held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), where Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz said Nazrul's literary contributions continue to inspire generations to stand against injustice and uphold equality and peace through unity.

“To understand Nazrul, one must first embrace human values,” he said, describing the poet as a symbol of rebellion, love, peace, and versatility.

The vice-chancellor also mentioned that a proposal to name a new residential hall at the university after Kazi Nazrul Islam is under active consideration.

Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Dr. Sayma Haque Bidisha and Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also addressed the event.

Director General of Bangla Academy and DU Bangla Department Professor Dr Mohammad Azam delivered the memorial lecture titled “The Mass Uprising of '24: The Legacy of Kazi Nazrul.”

The event was conducted by Bangla Department Chair Professor Dr Serajul Islam (Seraj Salekeen),and included musical performances by students and teachers of the Music Department featuring Nazrul’s compositions.

Nazrul Islam, who was awarded the title of National Poet in independent Bangladesh, was buried on the university campus.
