Around 17,000 migrant workers failed to arrive in Malaysia before the May 31 deadline, said State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters at the ministry office in Dhaka’s New Eskaton, he said that the ministry had approved 526,676 workers for migration to Malaysia, while the Bureau of Manpower, Employment, and Training (BMET) had approved 493,642. Out of these, 16,970 workers did not reach Malaysia by the deadline.

The state minister added that a six-member committee, led by Additional Secretary Noor Md Mahbubul Haq, has been formed to look into why these migrant workers had failed to reach Malaysia before the deadline.
Vowing to bring to book those responsible for this failure, he said that the committee is expected to submit its report within seven days, after which actions will be taken based on its findings.
