Neurosciences Hospital Director Din Mohammad moves to resign amid doctor unrest
Prof Dr Kazi Din Mohammad, director of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka, has requested the termination of his contractual appointment.
On Wednesday, he submitted a letter to Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum requesting the cancellation of his appointment, reports bdnews24.com.
Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, spokesperson for the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division, told bdnews24.com: “He has submitted a letter to the health advisor requesting the termination of his contract-based appointment, citing his inability to continue. The letter has been forwarded to the public administration ministry for further action.”
Around four months ago, Dr Guru Das Mondal, a doctor at the Neurosciences Hospital affiliated with Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad, or SWACHIP, a pro-Awami League doctors' forum, was transferred to Pabna Medical College Hospital.
Recently, he was reinstated at the Neurosciences Hospital, sparking anger among anti-discrimination doctors.
On Wednesday, a group of doctors went to the director’s office to discuss the matter, leading to a brief commotion.
Later, as the doctors gathered in Room 402 for a meeting, hospital fourth-class employees and some outsourced staff allegedly attacked them on the director’s instructions.
Following the incident, doctors affiliated with BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami blamed the director Din Mohammad and called for his resignation.
Protesting the attack, doctors initiated a work stoppage at 10am on Wednesday.
However, by noon, they resumed services in the outpatient and emergency departments.
A distinguished neurologist, Din Mohammad is the founding director of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital.
He has held the position since 2014.
