Newly appointed Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has called for cooperation from all to reduce the backlog of cases in the courts.
He made the remarks on Sunday, his first working day after taking the oath, while speaking at a reception organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, reports bdnews24.com.
CJ Zubayer was sworn in on Dec 28. As the Supreme Court was “in vacation” at the time, he did not participate in judicial proceedings earlier.
On Sunday, when the court reopened after the vacation, the Bar Association hosted a reception in his honour.
The programme began at 10:30 am in Courtroom No. 1 of the Appellate Division, where Acting Attorney General Md Arshadur Rouf delivered the opening speech.
The acting attorney general urged the chief justice to initiate a reform drive to free the judiciary from the influence of syndicates.
AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, also addressed the gathering.
He said that by establishing an autocratic rule, the judiciary had been placed in confrontation with the public, and corruption and syndicates took root in various ways.
Although the Supreme Court has seen significant development, he said, little has been done for the development of lawyers.
He also called for action against corruption, regardless of who was involved in it.
