Nine more museums to be set up in Cumilla

CUMILLA, Oct 07: The Department of Archeology has planned to set up nine more museums in the district.

The launch of the museums will create a new horizon in the tourism sector in the district. An immense potential for new employment will be created.

Moreover, government's revenue will increase.

According to sources, in January 2018, the Department of Archeology, Cumilla office proposed the setting up nine museums in Cumilla.

The museums are:  Zamindar house of Nawab Faizunnesa in Laksam, home of Sachin Dev Burman in Cumilla town and the queen cottage on the north side of the Dharamsagar Dighi.

All three will be made memorial museums. Memorabilia of the person concerned will be found in the museums.

Other proposed museums are: Rupban Mura Bihar of Kotbari in Cumilla, Itakhola Bihar, Latikot Bihar, Rani Mainamati Palace near Burichang Sahib Bazar, Ratna Temple of Jagannathpur in Cumilla and Chandimura Temple in Lalmai area of Cumilla.

Sources said as many as 4.0 million visitors come a year to the Shalban Bihar, Mainamati museums and private entertainment centres in Cumilla Kotbari area. It is estimated that more than 8.0 million visitors will come here a year after the launching of the museums.

Jahangir Alam Imrul, director of Heritage Cumilla, cultural and tourism organisation, said the Cumilla region is rich in archeological resources. With the construction of these nine museums, tourism will develop immensely in Cumilla region. Hotel, motel and restaurant businesses will expand further.

Abul Hasanat Babul, former president of Cumilla Press Club, said it was undoubtedly a good initiative of the government. "The sooner these nine museums are opened, the better for us", he said.

Ali Akbar Masum, general secretary of the Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA), said healthy environment must be kept in mind when developing museums.

Dr Ataur Rahman, regional director of the Cumilla Office of the Department of Archeology, said, "Repair work on the house of Zamindar of Nawab Faizunnesa in Laksam is going on. Some work has also been done in the house of Sachin Dev Burman. Rupban Mura Vihar and Itakhola Vihar are in the works."
