On the cusp of heading an interim government, Muhammad Yunus says restoring law and order in the country and ensuring everyone’s safety is at the top of his list of duties.
The Nobel laureate said, “If you put your faith and trust in me, you can rest assured that no one will be attacked in any part of the country. This is our first duty.”
“If you don’t listen to me, then I am not needed here; you can bid me farewell. If you feel you need me, then you have to listen to me,” he said.
Muhammad Yunus said, "My first priority is to save the country from chaos and violence so that we can move forward in the direction our students guide us in.”
The former Grameen Bank chief arrived at Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday at 2:10 pm on an Emirates flight from Paris via Dubai.
Yunus took oath as the head of the interim government at the Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall at 9:30 pm on Thursday.
While speaking to the media at the airport, he said the disruption of the law and order in the country and the attacks on various places are all a part of a conspiracy.
“I want to bring those who have gone astray on the right path. So that we can work together. Before arriving, I heard that there is lawlessness on the streets here, people are attacking others, burning down houses and property, theft and robbery is taking place. Offices and courts are being attacked; minorities are being attacked. This is a part of the conspiracy.”
“Our job is to protect every human being. Every human being is our brother, our sister. Our job is to protect everyone and restore order in the country. Unrest, violence – these are the enemies of progress. It is also the enemy of the journey we have embarked on,” he added.
While emphasising the restoration of law and order in the country, Yunus said, “These enemies have to be stopped by making them understand, or with the help of law enforcing agency. They cannot be persuaded by killing. Maintaining law and order is our first task.”
The government of the past few years has led to a crisis in the people’s confidence, and now only believe it is an instrument of repression, Yunus said.
