The Bangladesh Army has not been instructed by the government to perform any duties in the upcoming central student union elections at universities, and there is no possibility of such involvement in the future.
This clarification came through a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Wednesday.
The release noted that recently, various media outlets and social media platforms have circulated reports regarding the possible deployment of the Bangladesh Army in the forthcoming university central student union elections.
These reports have come to the attention of the army, the ISPR added.
In the release, the Bangladesh Army stated that it believes the upcoming central student union elections will be held in a peaceful and festive environment with the direct support of the existing law enforcement agencies and the overall supervision of the university authorities.
The Army also extended its best wishes to all concerned ahead of the elections.
Earlier on Tuesday, Dhaka University authorities, in a separate press release, had announced that three layers of security would be deployed during the DUCSU and hall union elections.
According to that announcement, the first layer would comprise members of the university’s BNCC and proctorial team, the second layer would involve police, and the third layer would see the army positioned as a ‘striking force’ at seven entry points of the campus.
