Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Friday that while there is vehicle pressure on the roads during the Eid-ul-Azha journey, there are no traffic jams.
Authorities concerned have been instructed to prevent random parking of cattle-carrying vehicles and the setting up of cattle markets in undesignated areas, he told a press conference at the Awami League President’s Office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
The transport and bridges minister warned that if it rains, it will be challenging to avoid sufferings, emphasising the need for increasing monitoring to prevent accidents and casualties.
Addressing the issue of inflation, Mr Quader noted that it is causing hardships worldwide and Bangladesh is no exception.
He described the proposed budget as balanced and reflective of current realities, saying that it was presented in parliament after extensive brainstorming led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Regarding the remand of the Jhenaidah district Awami League general secretary over the murder of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim aka Anar, Mr Quader, also the central Awami League general secretary, said that no one should be labelled a criminal before they are convicted.
He questioned if there were any instances during the BNP and Ershad regimes where a district general secretary was placed on remand, asserting that the Awami League is committed to ensuring justice.
Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Organising Secretary BM Mozammel Huq, among others, spoke at the event.
