Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur has expressed concern that a situation similar to the one-eleven political crisis may unfold in the country.

Comments made by some political parties and newly formed organisations have created a negative perception about the army, raising fears of a shift in the country’s political landscape, he told reporters at Barishal Press Club on Monday.

Alleging that new conspiracies are underway, the former DUCSU vice president said currently there is no elected government in the country and that various groups may exploit the situation to create a ‘complex situation’.

Referring to statements by student leaders Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and student organisations like the Jatiya Nagarik Party, Nur said their remarks targeting the army are raising fears of creating ‘a complex situation’.

“When the July–August movement leadership speaks of rehabilitating the Awami League in the name of the army, it sparks fear and anxiety among the public,” he said. “However, we have learned that it was the student leaders who went to meet the army chief—the army chief did not invite them.”

He added, “The Jatiya Nagarik Committee should investigate and disclose to the nation why they met the army chief and what was discussed.”

Praising Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman’s role during on August 5, when the uprising reached its peak, Nur compared Waker to former Army Chief Nuruddin Khan, who famously told then-President Ershad, “Mr President, you have to quit.”

“Similarly, despite being a relative of Sheikh Hasina’s, Waker-Uz-Zaman told her on August 4, ‘Prime Minister, you have to quit’,” Nur claimed.

He described the recent comments against the army as “deliberate and ill-motivated,” adding, “We must not forget the army’s role in the mass uprising.”

Terming the current situation as one marked by rising fascism, Nur called for a national dialogue to build political consensus by reducing division ahead of Eid.

Nur spoke to reporters before joining a working committee meeting of the party’s Barishal city and district units.

At the meeting, he called on the party leaders and activists to work collectively to ensure victory in the upcoming national election.

Barishal district unit President Shamim Reza, General Secretary HM Hasan, and city unit President Golam Kibria also spoke at the meeting.
