Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country was suspended on Saturday night after an oil tanker wagon of a freight train derailed in the Mollikpur area of Fenchuganj upazila.
The incident occurred around 9:30 pm, said Enayet Karim, officer-in-charge of Sylhet Railway Police Station.
According to railway sources, a wheel of the Sylhet-bound freight train’s wagon suddenly derailed, halting train traffic on the Sylhet-Dhaka-Chattogram route.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
A relief train has been dispatched from Kulaura Shed to recover the derailed wagon.
Sylhet Railway Station Manager Mohammad Nurul Islam said the rail services with Sylhet will remain suspended until rescue and repair operations are completed.
As a result, Udayan and Upaban Express will not depart Sylhet Station until the line is cleared.
