The Online Editors Alliance (OEA) has expressed deep sorrow at the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, three-time former prime minister of Bangladesh, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and a leading symbol of the country’s democratic movement.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday (December 30), OEA President Hasan Sharif and General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Sohel prayed for the eternal peace and forgiveness of the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt sympathy to her bereaved family.
They said Begum Khaleda Zia occupies an inseparable chapter in Bangladesh’s political history. Her leadership in restoring democracy, reintroducing the parliamentary system of government, and establishing multi-party democracy will remain memorable in the nation’s history.
Describing her as a resolute, courageous, and uncompromising leader, the OEA leaders said she devoted her life to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty, democracy, and constitutional rights. Her political life will continue to inspire generations.
They added that as an elected representative and stateswoman, Begum Khaleda Zia was not only a leader of a political party but an integral part of the nation’s history. With her passing, the country has lost a towering political figure.
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6:00am on Tuesday (December 30) while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. She had been suffering from multiple complications for a long time.
