Mishaps, suicides, clashes, drowning at sea beach

Over 50 killed since June 5 across country

Over 50 people were killed in various incidents across the country during the Eid holidays since June 5.

The incidents mostly involved road accidents but also included suicides, clashes, and drownings at Cox's Bazar sea beach while bathing in rough weather.

According to a report from Cumilla, a total of seven people, including a woman and three children, have been found dead in Cumilla on Tuesday and Monday, with police suspecting suicide in most cases.

The bodies were recovered from three Upazilas-Titas and Brahmanpara with three each, and one from Burichang.

Titas Police Station chief Md Shahid Ullah said Monu Mia, a speech-impaired man, attempted suicide after allegedly feeding pesticide to his two speech-impaired daughters in Tulakandi village on Monday morning.

Later, around 11am at Machimpur Paschimpara, a 55-year-old man named Murshid Mia died by suicide.

He reportedly hanged himself, "unable to bear the burden of debt". He is survived by his wife and a child.

In Brahmanpara, police found the body of Antara Akter, 25, hanging by the neck, in Ward No. 5 of Shidli Union Tuesday morning.

Also in Brahmanpara, Md Tutul, 28, died from electrocution while trying to charge a battery-run three-wheeler.

Meanwhile, authorities have reported the recovery of bodies of six people, including tourists, along the Cox's Bazar coastline Tuesday and Monday.

Despite the red flag being hoisted as a warning due to the formation of holes in the sea and the strong current, most tourists were ignoring it and entering the sea. As a result some tourists have died in the last two days while bathing.

Ilias Khan, chief of Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said five of the bodies were recovered within the Sadar police station region. Among them were three tourists and a local.

Meanwhile, three friends were killed in a head-on collision between a motorbike and a passenger bus on the Itakhola-Shibpur regional road in Narsingdi on Monday night.

Quoting relatives, police said the trio had gone to the district town to roam around on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

In Bagerhat, one person was killed and 20 others were injured in a road accident in Mulghar area on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Fakirhat upazila here Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred when the driver of a passenger bus lost control over the steering and hit a roadside tree in the area, leaving one killed on the spot and 20 others injured.

In Khulna, two people were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an easy-bike in the Darogar Bhita area near Rupsha Bridge in Khulna early Monday.

In Kishoreganj, a woman was killed and her two children were injured in a road accident in Baily Bridge area on the Kishoreganj-Bhairab regional highway of Sadar upazila of the district Monday.

A female doctor who was riding a rickshaw died after being crushed under a reckless truck in Sylhet on Sunday.

The deceased, Rahima Khatun Jessy, 27, was the daughter of Abu Noser of Lalabazar area in South Surma upazila of Sylhet.

In Manikganj, a motorcyclist was killed after being involved in a head-on collision with a bus in Manikganj's Ghior on Sunday, police said.

Meanwhile, in Bagerhat, two people were killed and 30 others injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over establishing supremacy in Mollahat upazila of Bagerhat on Saturday night.

Police said the injured were receiving treatment at Mollahat Upazila Health Complex, Khulna Medical College and Hospital and Gopalganj Sadar Hospital.

Locals said a longstanding dispute had existed between Ershad Chowdhury and his cousin Masum Chowdhury of Singati village over establishing dominance in the area.

The two groups had clashed several times in the past over the issue.

In another incident two people were killed and five others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Chandpur's Matlab Upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred near Bordia Bridge in the upazila when a Chandpur-bound CNG auto-rickshaw collided with a Dhaka-bound bus of Jainpur Paribahan, leaving seven people including a child injured.

A motorcycle rider was killed in a head- on collision with a passenger bus on the flyover at Pancho Rasta in Ghior upazila of Manikganj on Sunday.

In Narayanganj, the bodies of two passengers who went missing after a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw fell into Meghna River from a ferry in Araihazar have been recovered around 6pm Saturday about 13 hours after the accident occurred at Bishanandi Ferry Ghat in the upazila.

The deceased were Khaleda Begum, 55, and her daughter-in-law Farzana Akhter, 22. They are residents of Rasullabad village in Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria.

Father and son were killed in a fatal road accident at Noymail area on the Dhaka-Bogura highway of Shajahanpur upazila of Bogura on Saturday.

Road accident in Thakurgaon killed a van driver on Saturday. The accident occurred following a head-on collision between an auto-charger and a van coming from the opposite direction on the Women's College Road at Raghunathpur Sundari More in the municipality, leaving the van driver seriously injured, locals said.

Meanwhile in Mymensingh, two people were killed and twelve others injured when a bus crashed into a roadside mosque on Mymensingh-Sherpur regional road in Tarokanda upazila of Mymensingh district, police said on Friday.

Two persons, including a child, were killed in two separate road accidents at Sadar and Kotchandpur upazilas of Jhenidah on Friday. In another Jhalakathi road accident left one killed on Friday.

The deceased was Md Miraj, 45, son of Abdul Matin of Battola area in Betagi upazila of Barguna district.

The accident occurred when the driver of a mini bus lost control over the steering and hit a roadside tree, leaving Miraj killed on the spot and five others injured.

A person was killed in a road accident in Sangkardir Bridge area of Rajoir upazila of Madaripur on Friday.

In Mymensingh, four persons including father and son were killed and 12 others injured in separate road accidents in Tarakanda upazila of the district Friday.

Three people were killed and three others injured in a collision between a battery-run auto-rickshaw and a passenger bus this afternoon in Dokanghar area on the Gaibandha-Palashbari regional highway.

In another accident in Gaibandha, a couple died in a road accident around 9:00pm on Thursday in the Chapriganj area on the Bogura-Rangpur Highway.

The victims, Anwar Hossain and his wife Sharmin Akhter, hailed from Katgiri village, Shilkuri union, Bhurungamari upazila, Kurigram.

A person was killed and another injured in a road accident in Gunahati area of Baraigram upazila of Natore on Thursday.

Police said the accident occurred when a rice-laden truck collided head-on with a mini covered van in the area, leaving covered van driver Jewel dead on the spot. Another person named Jalal Molla was injured in the incident.

In Magura, a man was killed and his wife was critically injured in a road accident in Maghir Dhal area on the Magura-Jashore highway today.

The accident occurred when motorcyclist Mosharraf lost control over the steering and hit a roadside tree, leaving him and his wife critically injured.

In Brahmanbaria, three people were killed when a bus hit a CNG run-auto-rickshaw on Nabinagar-Companiganj road in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district early Thursday.

The accident occurred at Bashbazar early in this morning when the bus crashed into the Cumilla-bound CNG-run auto-rickshaw, leaving three killed on the spot, said sub-inspector of Nabinagar Police Station, Azadur Rahman.
