A total of 510 Supreme Court lawyers, mostly Awami League supporters, have issued a statement protesting the open letter sent by Nobel laureates and global figures to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding the trial proceedings against Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus in various courts of Bangladesh.
“We have noticed the letter sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from some Nobel Laureates and global figures. The global leaders urged to stop the judicial proceedings running in different courts of the country against Prof Yunus,” read the statement presented by Md Abdun Nur Dulal, secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), representing the lawyers as he read out the statement during a press conference on Monday.
“We consider this as a clear threat to the sovereignty of the country and also to the impendence of the judiciary. As lawyers of the highest court of the country, we are deeply concerned about such “undue interference in the judicial process of Bangladesh.".
Earlier on September 7, a total of 301 lawyers of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, mostly pro-BNP lawyers, issued a statement demanding an end to the present government’s harassment and oppressive measures against Prof Yunus.
