After daylong speculations over punitive action against Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) head AFM Shahinul Islam, the government finally formed a four-member team to fact-check a controversial viral video implicating him.

The Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the Ministry of Finance made its additional secretary Md Sayeed Kutub convener of the team.

Other members of probe body are executive director of Bangladesh Bank (BB) Md. Sirajul Islam, director (ICT-2) of the BB Md. Matiur Rahman and FID joint secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam.

In an office order issued Wednesday, the FID asked the committee to submit its findings within next seven working days.

Simultaneously, the central bank in another press note said the BFIU head has been asked to be on leave "in interest of the investigation in accordance with the instructions of the government".

Earlier on Tuesday, BB governor Dr Ahsan H. Mansur sent the BFIU head on mandatory leave as the video scandal spread. But the BFIU head attended office the following day (Wednesday) in defiance of the order.

And it triggered speculations among BB officials that the BFIU boss being influenced by somebody else joined the office. Due to this situation, there was some tension observed among central-bank staff members.

Under the leadership of BB's Additional Director Nazrul Islam, about 10-20 officials were seen gathering in front of the central bank. They, however, didn't stage any protest.
