The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested a man accused of killing his mother-in-law in Mymensingh’s Muktagacha upazila, just two days after the incident.

The suspect, Monir Hossain, 25, was held late on May 3 from the Kotbari area near Comilla University, under Sadar Police Station in Cumilla district, said Yousuf, Superintendent of Police (Media) at the PBI Headquarters.

According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of May 1, around 2:00 am, following a family dispute, as per a UNB report.

Monir, along with accomplices, allegedly broke into his in-laws’ home and attacked his sister-in-law Ruma Akhter while she was asleep, striking her on the forehead, left ear and arm with a sharp knife.

As Ruma screamed for help, Monir’s wife Taslima Akhter and her mother Fozila Begum rushed to the scene. Monir then reportedly stabbed his mother-in-law in the abdomen multiple times before fleeing.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Muktagacha Upazila Health Complex. Fozila Begum was later shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Taslima Akhter filed a case with Muktagacha Police Station the same day.

PBI Mymensingh took over the investigation on May 3, led by Sub-Inspector (Unarmed) Khazem Mahmud.

Based on intelligence and technical surveillance, a PBI team traced Monir to his hideout in Cumilla and made the arrest that night.

PBI Mymensingh’s Superintendent Mohammad Rakibul Akhter said the murder sparked concerns in the local community.

Monir had gone into hiding in the Comilla University area after the incident. On May 4, Monir gave a confessional statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, admitting his involvement in the murder.
