Farmers in six districts of the country’s south-western region — Jashore, Jhenidah, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanga and Meherpur — are busy cultivating and caring for winter vegetables.
Many of them, already harvesting early varieties of winter vegetables, have started cultivation of other varieties of vegetables.
Several farmers from Bagharpara, Chougachha and Sadar sub-districts of Jashore told this correspondent that they have started cultivating other varieties of winter vegetables after harvesting early varieties like radish.
Prices of winter vegetables have been satisfactory since this season began and farmers are delighted at it. However, with the vegetables entering the market in bulk, the prices have now decreased.
At different markets of Jashore, eggplant is now retailing at Tk 25 to 30 per kg, cauliflower at Tk 25 per kg, bean at Tk 30 per kg and depending on the size, gourd at Tk 20 to 30 per piece.
Cabbage is retailing at TK. 25 per kg, radish at TK 20 per kg, green chili at Tk 80 per kg, red and green leafy vegetables at TK 25 to 30 per kg and spinach at Tk 20 to 25 per kg.
Jashore Regional Department of Agricultural Extension has set a target of producing 16,13,225 metric tonnes of vegetables on 6,226 hectares of land in the six districts of the south-western region during this winter.
Jashore Regional Agriculture Extension Department Additional Director Pertho Pratim Saha says they are visiting villages to help farmers cultivate winter vegetables and also providing technical assistance to them.
The target for producing winter vegetables may be crossed this winter as farmers are seeing profits in the production, he adds.
