A petition has been filed at a Dhaka court to register a case against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Jail Superintendent Subhash Kumar Ghosh, and 61 others over the alleged killing of prisoner Javed at Dhaka Central Jail.

The deceased's cousin Shikder Liton filed the application in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman on Tuesday, bdnews24.com reports.

The Plaintiff’s lawyer, Mahmudul Alam Shahin, said: “The court has accepted the complainant’s statement and instructed Keraniganj Model Police Station to submit an investigation report within five working days.”

“The report should confirm whether the victim has passed away and whether any case has been registered regarding the incident.”

He added, “The court will issue an order after receiving the report from the police station.”

The case application alleges that on August 5, around 12:00 pm, prisoners at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj began a protest during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

During the protest, members of the Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League, and the police reportedly opened fire on the prisoners.

Several prisoners were injured, including Javed, identified with a single name, who later died while receiving treatment at the jail hospital. Liton, the plaintiff, was also injured during the shooting.

Liton, a journalist by profession, published a report in 2019 against Arifur Rahman Dolon, the vice president of the Bangladesh Krishak League.

In retaliation, Dolon filed a case against Liton under the Digital Security Act. Liton was sent to jail on October 28, 2020.
