Poet Sohel Hasan Galib has been removed from his role as a training specialist at the National Academy for Educational Management, or NAEM, following his arrest on charges of hurting religious sentiments.
After his posting was revoked, Galib was attached as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Shyamnagar Government Mohsin Degree College in Satkhira.
The decision was announced in a notice from the Ministry of Education’s Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education on Thursday.
A provision allows for the suspension of arrested education cadre officials, reports bdnews24.com.
Additionally, 13 other education cadre officials have been transferred, assigned as OSDs, or have been removed from their posts.
The notice says that Galib and the 13 others will be relieved of their current posts by Feb 27. If not, they will be “considered to be relieved with immediate effect" that afternoon.
In 2024, Galib faced criticism over a poem published in a book by Ujan Prakashan.
After the poem went viral on social media, Galib was accused of “satirising” the Prophet Muhammad.
Police detained Galib at Sanarpar Narayanganj's Fatullah, around 8:30pm on Feb 13 under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for hurting religious sentiment.
He was remanded for two days for questioning.
On Feb 14, he was brought to court and arrested under section 54.
Galib's lawyer had applied for bail at the hearing, seeking the cancellation of his remand. After the hearing, the court ordered him to be taken to jail.
Over 100 writers, artists, teachers, journalists, rights activists, and other notable professionals have demanded Galib’s unconditional release and guarantees of his security.
