Poisonous sea snakes wash up on Cox’s Bazar beach

Three yellow-bellied sea snakes, one of the world's most venomous species, have washed up on Cox’s Bazar beach over the past week, local officials said. One snake was killed by tourists, while the other two were buried by beach workers.

The yellow-bellied sea snake, with its distinctive black, dark blue, and brown upper body and yellow underside, typically inhabits the open waters of the Pacific and Indian oceans. These snakes rarely appear on coastlines.

Oceanographer Syed Mahmood Belal Haider, secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, said that these snakes thrive in tropical waters with temperatures between 18-20 degrees Celsius.

He added that their recent appearance on the beach is unusual.

Local authorities concerned have already issued warnings to tourists about the venomous sea snakes.

"Beach staff are using loudspeakers, and digital displays at hotel and beach entrances are providing instructions," said Additional District Magistrate Yamin Hossain.

“Increased warnings and guidance will continue as sea snakes are more frequently observed during the monsoon season,” he added.
