Police arrest 17 people from Mohammadpur, Adabar in city

Killer of Bongshal drug trader caught within 24 hours

Police arrested 17 people on various charges during separate raids in the capital's Mohammadpur and Adabar areas.

DMP Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said a team of Mohammadpur Police Station nabbed 13 people during a special drive on Thursday.

The arrestees were Jabir (25), Mithu (19), Adar (22), Anon (18), Nayan (20), Hridoy (26), Mehedi Hasan (21), Al Amin (21), Diganta (22), Jewel (27), Raihan (19), Monir (29), and Shaheen (35). Two kilogrammes of hashish and one mobile set were also recovered from their possession.

Besides, a team of Adabar Police Station arrested four persons during another raid.

The arrestees were Md Mamun-or-Rashid alias Abir (35), Qazi Md Jaed (32), Md Younus (22), and Md Rustam Ali (50). The arrestees, accused in different cases, were sent to the court.

Meanwhile, a team of Bongshal Police Station arrested the killer of drug trader Md Hira in the city's Malitola within 24 hours of the murder.

"An operation team of the Bongshal Police Station, with the help of information technology, managed to detain the killer Md Jibon Miah, 30, from Kalatia Bazar area of Keraniganj on August 7 and recovered the knife used in the murder," a DMP release said .

Jibon went to Hira's residence at 48 Golok Pal Lane in Malitola around 8am on August 6 to buy two yaba tablets. As Jibon had no cash and wanted to pay later, an altercation broke out between them, which soon turned into a physical scuffle.

"At one stage, Jibon repeatedly stabbed Hira and fled the scene. Hira died on the spot," the DMP release added.

The arrestee has been sent to court, where he has already given a confessional statement.
