Police resorted to baton charges and water cannons to disperse teacher candidates protesting outside the chief advisor’s residence around 3:30 pm on Friday.
The protestors had gathered after the High Court annulled the recruitment process for primary school teachers.
The court verdict on Thursday nullified the appointment of 6,531 candidates for the posts of assistant teachers in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.
It also ordered that appointments be made based on merit.
Following the court’s decision, job aspirants gathered outside the National Press Club on Thursday night, and held a rally on Friday morning to demand confirmation of their appointments.
They then marched to the chief advisor’s residence at 3pm.
When the protestors faced resistance from police and continued to push forward, a confrontation ensued.
Police then resorted to baton charges and used water cannons to disperse them.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Police Station Inspector (Operations) Atikul Islam said, "When the teacher candidates attempted to approach the chief advisor’s residence, they were obstructed.
“However, they continued moving forward and eventually had to be dispersed."
Protest leader Piyash Talukdar said, “We are demanding the confirmation of our appointments and seeking the chief advisor’s intervention.
“The police beat several of us, including a pregnant woman, and threw hot water on us.”
“We have returned to the National Press Club, hoping that the chief advisor will call us to resolve the issue. We seek his intervention to secure our appointments,” he concluded.
