A Dhaka court has granted police four days to interrogate the driver and caretaker of Tarique Ahmed Siddique, the defence and security advisor of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the killing of a businessman during the July Uprising.
Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order on Monday after investigators produced the duo before the court seeking a seven-day remand.
The suspects were identified as Md Chan Mia, the driver, and Md Mohidul Islam, the caretaker.
Mohidul was apprehended on Sunday in Islambagh of Thakurgaon Sadar, while Chan Mia was picked up from Dhaka’s Bhashantek.
Inspector Md Amzad Hossain Talukdar of the Detective Branch (DB), representing the Ramna Zone, presented the suspects in court.
Public Prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid argued in favour of the remand, noting that there were no lawyers present to represent the suspects.
After hearing the prosecution’s arguments, the court sanctioned a four-day custodial interrogation to facilitate further investigation into their alleged roles.
The arrests are tied to the death of Abdul Wadud, a businessman who was fatally shot on the afternoon of Jul 19, 2024, in Nilkhet near New Market during the student-led movement.
The victim’s brother-in-law Abdur Rob filed the murder case at New Market Police Station.
The lawsuit names 130 individuals as suspects, including Hasina and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
