A teenage boy was allegedly tortured to death by police in Ananda Bazar area of Zanjira upazila in Shariatpur on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Pavel Sheikh, son of Abdur Rouf Sheikh of Krishnanagar Purbakajikandi village under Bibeknagar union. He passed this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination from Bibeknagar Bangabandhu College.

Victim's family members alleged that when Pavel along with his cousin Shanta Sheikh was standing by a road in the bazaar area, a police team approached them.

At one stage, a policeman got down from the police vehicle and started checking pockets of Pavel's pants.

Then he beat Pavel and he collapsed on the ground, according to UNB.

The police team took the college boy to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Denying the allegation, Md Belayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of Zanjira Police Station, said police did not beat Pavel.

"Pavel was an epilepsy patient which might have been the reason behind his death," he said.

Police super of the district Abdul Momen also denied the allegation, saying police tried to check his pockets when he collapsed and died.

However, victim's father Abdur Rouf Sheikh claimed that his son was fully fit and he never developed epilepsy.
