462 contestants get green light, 47 out of race

A total of 462 candidates have been declared preliminarily valid for the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, while 47 have been suspended due to faulty nomination papers.

Chief Returning Officer Jasim Uddin announced the figures at a press conference on Thursday (21 August) night.

According to the breakdown, 43 male and five female candidates are contesting for the vice-president (VP) post. For the general secretary (GS) post, 18 male and one female candidates are in the race while the assistant general secretary (AGS) post has 24 male and four female candidates.

Other posts include: Liberation war and student movement secretary (14 male, one female); science and technology secretary (10 male, one female); career development secretary (seven male, two female); social welfare secretary (13 male); human rights and law secretary (eight male, three female); health and environment secretary (12 male, three female); student transport secretary (nine male); sports secretary (12 male, one female); research and publication secretary (seven male, four female); common room, reading room, and cafeteria secretary (two male, nine female); international secretary (15 male); literature secretary (17 male, two female); and member (191 male, 24 female).

In total, 402 male and 60 female candidates have been declared valid for the polls.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission also confirmed that 1,108 candidates are eligible for the hall union elections while one candidacy was suspended.

Officials explained that nominations were suspended because of errors such as mismatched voter ID numbers, names, registration details, or incorrect signatures.

Candidates have until August 23 to file appeals, and the final list will be published on August 24 after further scrutiny.

Campaign restricted before August 26.

The Election Commission has issued strict guidelines for campaign activities. Candidates are barred from launching publicity campaigns on the campus or in the halls before August 26. Any violation will be treated as a breach of the electoral code of conduct.

Another notice stated that from now until September 10, no candidate or panel may engage in service-oriented activities on the campus, distribute gifts, provide hospitality, offer financial assistance, or conduct similar activities. Such actions will be considered as clear violations of the electoral code.

In a separate statement issued on Friday, the commission instructed candidates and their supporters to remove all campaign-related billboards and banners that have already been put up on the campus. Campaigning may only begin on the officially designated date, in line with the code of conduct.
